How to Measure Your Face Shape Accurately at Home
Accuracy starts with the tape measure. Use a soft, flexible tailor’s tape and stand in front of a well-lit mirror with hair pulled fully back. Keep the tape parallel to the floor for every horizontal reading — a tilt of even one centimetre can push you into the wrong face shape category.
The 4 Face Measurements You Need to Know
- Forehead width. Measure horizontally across the widest part of your forehead, roughly halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline.
- Cheekbone width. Place the tape across the most prominent part of your cheekbones — the bony point just below the outer corner of each eye.
- Jawline width. Start just below one ear, follow the natural curve of your jaw to the chin, then back up to the other ear.
- Face length. Measure vertically from the centre of your hairline straight down to the tip of your chin.
Pro Tips for Accurate Face Shape Measurement
- Take each measurement twice and use the average — small errors compound quickly.
- Stay relaxed; clenching the jaw can add up to 0.5 cm of false width.
- Use the same unit (cm or inches) for all four readings.
Characteristics of the 7 Face Shapes Explained
Every face shape is defined by the relationship between width and length, and by which feature dominates — forehead, cheekbones or jaw.
Oval Face Shape
Often called the “ideal” face shape because it suits almost every hairstyle. Face length is roughly 1.5 times the cheekbone width, the forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, and the jawline is gently rounded.
Round Face Shape
Width and length are nearly equal, with soft curves at the cheekbones and jaw. There are no sharp angles, and the cheeks are typically the widest part of the face.
Square Face Shape
The hallmark is a strong, angular jaw of roughly the same width as the forehead and cheekbones. Face length and width are similar, giving a powerful, structured look.
Heart Face Shape
The forehead is the widest point and the chin tapers to a soft point. Cheekbones sit narrower than the forehead, and the jawline is delicate.
Diamond Face Shape
Cheekbones are noticeably the widest feature, with a narrower forehead and an equally narrow, often pointed chin.
Oblong (Rectangle) Face Shape
Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all about the same width, but the face is significantly longer than it is wide.
Pear (Triangle) Face Shape
The jaw is the widest point, the forehead is narrower, and the cheekbones sit somewhere in between.

Best Styling Tips for Each Face Shape (Men & Women)
Once you know your face shape, hairstyles, glasses, beards and even neckline choices can be tuned to balance your proportions. The principle is simple: add visual width where the face is narrow, and soften areas where it is heaviest.
- Oval: Almost every cut works. Avoid styles that completely cover the forehead.
- Round: Volume on top and longer layers lengthen the face. Side parts work better than centre parts.
- Square: Soft waves, side-swept fringes and tapered beards soften the strong jawline.
- Heart: Chin-length cuts, side fringes and fuller beards add width to the lower face.
- Diamond: Fringes and styles with width at the forehead balance the prominent cheekbones.
- Oblong: Avoid extra height on top. Layers around the cheeks and full bangs visually shorten the face.
- Pear: Volume at the top and layers around the temples lift attention upward.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Face Shape Calculator?
The calculator is based on pure proportional ratios between forehead, cheekbone, jaw and face length — the same method used by hairstylists and image consultants. Take each reading twice with a soft tape measure and use the average for best results.
Is the Face Shape Calculator different for men and women?
The seven categories — Oval, Round, Square, Heart, Diamond, Oblong and Pear — are the same for both genders. However, the ideal hairstyles, beards, makeup and frames that flatter each face shape differ significantly between men and women. That’s why we provide two separate styling tables.
What is the most common face shape?
Oval is the most common and traditionally the most versatile, since its balanced proportions suit nearly any hairstyle, beard or frame. Round and Square shapes follow as next most common.
Can my face shape change over time?
Bone structure is mostly fixed by late adolescence, but visible face shape can shift with weight changes, ageing and muscle tone. Re-measure every few years.
What if my face seems to fit two shapes?
Hybrid shapes are very common — Oval-Heart, Square-Round and Diamond-Oblong are typical combinations. The calculator returns the closest single match. Borrow tips from the secondary shape that fits.
Do I need a tape measure or can I just estimate?
You can estimate visually but a one-minute measurement gives a far more reliable result, especially when shapes are close to the boundary.
How is this calculator related to body shape analysis?
Face shape and body shape together build a complete personal style profile — face guides hairstyles and frames, body guides necklines and silhouettes. Check your body shape to pair the two results.
